This should maybe be in the readme.md:

If you had an old version prior to 0.0.31 installed. Then "Rebuild Modules" is not enough. You need to delete the ~/.atom/packages/spark-dev/node_modules/serialport directory.

It automatically rebuilt and worked correctly for me on atom reload after this.
