Identifier highlighting is always one character to the left of the indentifier

I don't know exactly what this feature is called. What I mean is, when the caret is on top of an identifier, that identifier and all other references to that identifier are highlighted. The issue is that the highlight is always one character to the left of the identifier, see image:

I've seen this issue pop up sporadically in the past but I haven't been able to find a consistent way to reproduce the behavior - do you have one?

Unfortunately not. At first I thought it was this way all of the time, but later I realized that wasn't the case. What I can say is that when it does happen it happens in all files. Even newly opened ones.

The plot thickens...

Re-opening the file made it highlight the identifier the same way (one char to the left) for both occurrences.
