It's cleaner, apparently popular, and appears to support everything we need. WIP in https://github.com/openslide/openslide-python/pull/164, though we should break that out into a separate PR.
[Type hints](https://docs.python.org/3/library/typing.html) are now available in every Python version supported by OpenSlide Python. Consider adding them at least to the public API.
