thanks @bogdandrutu, I've deleted, and then re-created the branch protection for **/** to ensure the branch protections for renovatebot/** took precedence. It appears to have worked as the renovatebot can now update branches it creates!

Can confirm the work I needed access for is now completed. I've removed myself as admin of these two repositories. Please confirm I did it correctly and close the issue when you have a chance.
