Design dropdown to select language

I like how some sites enumerate the list of languages directly, instead of providing a dropdown. This helps with the bootstrapping problem of communicating to the user that the dropdown is meant for selecting the language. If I were on a page implemented in a language that I did not know, I could find the word for my language quicker in such an interface.

I have created two versions, one more minimal and one that's bigger, maybe could be used on wider screens?

I prefer the smaller one for general use. Was it something like this you had in mind?
