Using VoIP credentials outside the local network

As the title suggests, I have been able to extract the VoIP credentials, but I have been unable to use them on a softphone that is not connected to the router said credentials originated from. Is there anything in particular that has to be done to access the phone line from outside the network or is it not possible at all?
