Uploading the camera roll impossible

Open SommerEngineering opened this issue 7 years ago • 13 comments

Expected behaviour

After I enable automatic upload of new photos and upload of all known photos, all existing photos will be uploaded. Depending on the number of photos available, the process may take some time.

Actual behaviour

I have a bit more than 11000 photos on my iPhone. The app recognizes all existing photos and queues them. Immediately afterwards the app does not react to any further touch interactions. For example, scrolling in the list no longer works. The iPhone gets very hot and in about 15 minutes the battery level drops from 100% to about 60%. However, it is possible to continue using the iPhone by switching to the home screen. When I then switch back to the NextCloud app, the app terminates. If I restart the app, the 11000 photos are directly in the queue again, so that the app freezes directly again.

I changed the settings of NextCloud via the settings app and removed the permissions for the photo album. The interface then continues to freeze and rarely responds to user input. With one error message each, 1 photo is removed from the queue every approx. 30 seconds. With 11000 photos I would have to wait 229 days until all photos were removed from the queue.

A restart of the iPhone does not help. If I uninstall the app and then reinstall it, I can use the app properly. The queue is then obviously empty. I then manually transferred all the photos to my computer and uploaded the existing photos using the desktop app.

Steps to reproduce

I had just installed the app and therefore no longer used it. I then activated the automatic upload of photos and videos via WIFI. Then I activated the upload of all known photos. Prerequisite might be 11000 photos on the iPhone.

Hi @SommerEngineering , thanks for your report, can you try with last version available on TestFlight ?

With the TestFlight version the application does not freeze completely but its UI is still very laggy and barely usable. (Tested on iPhone X iOS 12, 10k+ photos)

Having th exact same problem as @georgekrasenov. But with 24k+ photos on my device. Upload is horribly slow (no network issue) and app crashes sometimes. Running on the testflight "App".

Same happened to me: I wanted to upload all photos and videos (1800files, ~7gb) from my iPhone5 via the auto-upload function to my nextcloud server: The app freezes for a long time (~10 min) then starts uploading - but cannot finish it!

I had 5gb of free memory on my phone before I started this precedure, but it seems like the nextcloud iOS app filled all this memory while uploading and when no more memory was available, it crashed!

When i looked in iOS settings --> memory usage, there was 0mb remaining, but no app showed consuming more data. Thus it seems like the app is caching somewhere and not deleting this memory while uploading....

This issue is still present. And essentially rendering this feature pretty useless.

#692 seems to be related.

I am having this problem also. New files are uploaded but some older ones are not even detected as needing to be uploaded.

Same issue here as well

Same issue here. I only have 4400 pictures on my phone and it’s been “uploading” for almost two weeks now. There are still 1480 files left.

The same feature in the Plex app finished the job in less than a day so it’s not a network or hardware related issue.

Any resolution to this., Exactly the same issue.

Still happening, 1100 photos. Same issue.

I’m also experiencing this issue, on the day I activated the feature photos taken on that day were uploaded, but nothing else.

iOS 13.3.1 Nextcloud for iOS v 2.25.9.2 Nextcloud server 18.0

Update

As an update to my previous post, I think this is a limitation with Nextcloud not having access to photos stored in iCloud. Photos are set to 'Optimise iPhone Storage' on my iPhone, but are local on my iPad. When using the NextCloud app on iPadOS the files upload just fine.

same issue here with nextcloud server 18 and fresh installation of ios client application. Any options for downgrade the iOs app?

Very old issue, but maybe for people with the problem in future. What helped for me was disabling the cache during the initial upload and manually clearing the cache a few times.

Still it took a very long time for ~5k Photos and also lot of battery (plug in to power and lay next to the router for best WiFi)
