plenty of issues prevent using this app as a backup solution (#685, #244, #158, many others). There has not been any real development activity for more than a year.
Users should not be tempted to rely on this app for production systems

This should be easily to execute in a batch script and/or cronjob: https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/admin_manual/maintenance/backup.html.
But the charm of the app is that is automates the procedure and makes full and incremental backups on local and external storage. I have current master code installed on my NC31 and it works more or less. Have to check the log files why it is not copying to the external storage any more.
I am not a coding expert but I have the impression that the (original) developers wanted to create a versatile and flexible solution. And I think they succeeded. I like the CLI-interface.
It would be a pity if this project died.
This is ridiculous. Nextcloud proudly spouts in all of its advertising about being a secure place for personal data and yet it doesn't have a way to make sure that very data is backed up in another location? That's like saying you have a fast car without an engine in it. This is fundamental, it's a basic need for anyone that uses Nextcloud for anything serious. Common backup strategies require it and no, a bash script to handle that is not a great option for various reasons, but the biggest being that it requires a lot more setup and care than this plugin.
Supposedly some people have contributed fixes to some of the issues and what's left does not seem impossible to resolve either. It's not that complex to begin with, so the fact even such a small, but vital, plugin is abandoned like this does not create confidence in the entire platform. Heck, quite frankly the functionality of this plugin should be a core feature of Nextcloud itself and not an optional plugin.
Nextcloud AOI has Borg Backup integrated. Might be a way to go and to be adapted to other external storage options.
Backups done on the host (like with borg) don't solve the self-service-restore aspect in NC. The app is a brilliant idea (NC admin can restore, but NC admin ist not the admin of the complete host OS.
