The docs say to install devicons to use the default theme here: https://github.com/ms-jpq/chadtree/blob/chad/docs/THEME.md#chadtree_settingsthemeicon_glyph_set

I installed these devicons and this is what my explorer looks like:

Is there a specific font I should be doing a better job of installing?

Also - maybe "ascii" should be the default theme?

The issue seems to be the font you are using does not have these devicons patched into the font. Can you a font from https://github.com/ryanoasis/nerd-fonts and select a font that is listed in there? How to set the font depends on the desktop environment and on your terminal. The font you select should have "NerdFont" in the font name.
