Join Gnome Circle
First of all, I'm not related to the Gnome project in any way (except using Gnome as my daily driver).
Recently, I leaned about Gnome Circle -> https://circle.gnome.org/ And as I found that your software is super useful and adds a lot to the functionality of Gnome, I think it deserves the attention that the initiative could give it.
I'm not sure if you were already aware of this but I just wanted to make sure you wont miss it.
Great idea. I've been thinking about this quite a bit.
Having a look at the criteria, extension-manager does meet all of the points. And with the new app icon in #84 we'll have a nice gnome-style icon as well.
If you have a look at the upstream issue for extension installation, there's been a bit of talk about improving the installation experience for sandboxed browsers, and what role Extension Manager will play in this compared with the official Extensions app.
The consensus seems to be that the official app will pick up support for sandboxed installation, likely using a URL scheme (which Extension Manager will also adopt), and that Extension Manager can fill in a more advanced role for "power users", which fits in nicely with other feature requests like Lists (#75).
On that basis, I think applying for Circle is a sensible next step. I was initially planning on waiting for 1.0 to apply, but given that we've already met the criteria, I think I'll look into it now for the next release.
That's good to know! I wanted to make sure that you were aware of that possibility, as I only learned about it recently after a couple of years using Gnome. You are doing an awesome job with the extension!
I took the liberty of filling out the application form as best I could. Here's as far as I got:
- Project name: Extension Manager
- Development site / code repository address: https://github.com/mjakeman/extension-manager
- Project license: GPLv3
- How to contact the project: GitHub issues?
- Flathub page*: https://flathub.org/apps/details/com.mattjakeman.ExtensionManager
- Installation instructions:
- Main dependencies and/or runtime: org.gnome.Platform/x86_64/41
Let's apply once 0.3 beta is released.
All basic functionality should be in-place by then and it would meet all the requirements of GNOME Circle. That'll roughly be after we support comments (#4 MR #100), updating (#16 MR #119), and error checking (#65 MR #123).
I've applied for inclusion in GNOME Circle: https://gitlab.gnome.org/Teams/Circle/-/issues/114
In addition to joining Circle, it would also be nice if the app's code were moved to GNOME World. GitHub is not an open source platform, and being owned by Microsoft makes it more of a danger to open source projects, rather than a help.
