I'd recommend upgrading to the latest `v3` registry release and reporting back. `v2` is basically in maintenance mode even though it's not quite "official" per se.

@sargun mind rebasing or closing this PR? It's been sitting this without any movement for a few years now.

I'm more in favour of https://github.com/distribution/distribution/pull/4306 than introducing new config
