There's no way to tell whether the engine has crashed or is just slow

If it is possible that the engine crashes, then one way is to check if it is active in the OS task list, or click on the Play now icon. There is the possibility to activate a log of the engine output, from Config/Save engines log. You can activate the on-screen log of the engine when setting up a game against an engine,
