I think we still need the paragraph style too, if I set a font property then it should still apply unless I override it. Perhaps the priority is incorrect here...

Just passing by to say that I've been using sphinx a little more myself and finding lots of tools don't quite support these references! Hopefully people are finding the extension...

Thanks for the detailed bug report. Do all the failing files fail with the same error message? I'm not sure we've tested against 3.9 yet but we definitely should do...

I agree that the footnote workaround is only a workaround, and also that we'd be very happy to have a fix for this if anyone could advise us!
