RetroArch crashes when getting an achievement with fastforward on
Description
There's games where I enable fast-forward to get through the slow loading screens (we are talking PSX here), and I've encountered this bug now many, many times and it's getting really annoying. Basically, if I unlock an achievement with fast-forward enabled, there's a very high chance my emulator will freeze and close. I checked the logs with Verbose enabled and the very last line simply states that I unlocked the achievement. This also happened to me once without fast-forward, so I don't know what gives. This happened to me on many games now, and with both Beetle PSX HW and Duckstation cores.
Expected behavior
Unlock the achievement with fast-forward on (or not) and resume playing.
Actual behavior
RetroArch has a very high chance of crashing on me when unlocking an achievement with fast-forward enabled.
Steps to reproduce the bug
- Get ready to meet the requirements for an achievement.
- Toggle fast-forward.
- Game crashes.
Bisect Results
This first happened to me when I installed Beetle PSX HW core around two weeks ago. I didn't even have fast-forward mode on when it crashed to me on Tenchu as soon as I got an achievement. Now it's started happening much more often with Duckstation.
Version/Commit
Latest Stable.
- RetroArch: [version/commit] 1.9.12.
Environment information
- OS: Windows 10. Here I attach one of the logs from when the game crashed on me as soon as I got an achievement.
I can unfortunately confirm, the same is happening to me, using Beetle PSX HW specifically. Fast-forward enabled while getting an achievement, and it crashes. Especially with the PSX loading times, this is quite annoying. To be even more specific, it happened while playing Broken Sword 1 and also while playing the sequel, so I am not sure if it is game related.
Do you have automatic screenshots on? It's probably the same issue as #11483 or one of the issues it links to.
Oh, interesting, thank you! I will turn the screenshotting off and see if it changes. That would be such a quality of life improvement!
@KhobarKast did turning off automatic screenshots fix this for you?
@Jamiras has this been fixed by now? Can this be closed?
I was never able to reproduce. The linked issue (#11483) is still open and describes a crash when taking a screenshot with vulkan in fullscreen and fast forward. The provided log shows the user was using vulkan in fullscreen and capturing screenshots, so I assume it's the same issue.
[INFO] [Environ]: SET_HW_RENDER, context type: vulkan.
[INFO] [Video]: Video @ fullscreen
[INFO] [RCHEEVOS]: Captured screenshot for achievement 89702
It is likely this is fixed now by this commit/PR -

@MortimerScharf You still around, and could you test?
I never really used that core any more, I just moved to Swanstation and never looked back. But no, I have not had it happened to me again.
