MoonScript (and Lapis) community site

Open leafo opened this issue 9 years ago • 18 comments

Hello,

I'm just using this issue for a quick poll. Would any of the people that visit here prefer to have a separate website with a community (message board) instead of using the github issues tracker? This would be for having general discussion, ideas about the language, and asking questions, so we can keep this tracker for issues.

I'm thinking either I can put something together with lapis host it on moonscript.org, or if anyone has any ideas for existing sofware I can check it out as well.

Also, if you weren't aware we're on irc.freenode.org channel #moonscript

What about Google Groups?

I would enjoy having Moonscript-related discussions hosted on moonscript.org.

@kirbyfan64 I'm personally not a fan of Google Groups considering Google's past experience with closing off services that "aren't needed anymore" (see: Google Code).

@branefreez has a good point; MoonScript discussion could/should go on or under (subdomain) the MoonScript website. I'm fine with the idea for a Lapis-based message board.

Well, Google Groups isn't necessarily "not popular" (like Google Code turned), and they did archive it. Besides, with Groups, you don't have to worry about exploits/spam/hacking, since it's all taken care of.

I personally find Google Ghettos Groups to be unappealing in general. Maybe use something like Discourse? A custom forum system does sound fun to work on, though, but I happen to be a chronic time-waster, so my opinion is negligible at best, heheh.

*Google Groups. I hate auto correct.

Discourse seems really nice looking. I don't see a problem with using it. And @Kingdaro there is no reason that your opinion should be negligable; having something up in a 'timely manner' is a good reason to use something. Plus, if it crashes, can't blame us! (Well, you can. Just... Not all the time.)

I've pretty much already build the community tools: https://github.com/leafo/lapis-community

Also I much prefer using moonscript to power moonscript related things. I just want to get and idea if people would use it

I would love to have this (primarily for lapis since that's where I most often run into issues).

TangentFoxy avatar Jan 16 '16 16:01 TangentFoxy

definitely yes! :)(lapis)

:+1: for a lapis-community board

This is definitely a good idea.

My update to this idea: https://github.com/leafo/lapis/issues/398#issuecomment-395147178

I think forums are a little antiquated and would prefer a more real-time discussion platform such as IRC or Discord. MoonScript already has an IRC channel but it is virtually dead. Discord has tools and features that improve upon what IRC offers and could help encapsulate multiple branches of a "leafo community" into one place.

Promotion of a community location or locations would also be useful as I don't really see anything that directs people to a community platform which is why people just end up here in the issue tracker.

I wouldn't mind if there was a Discord server as well as an IRC bridge, but that would cause an issue where Discord could, for example, have #moonscript and #lapis but IRC only has #moonscript for both software, meaning it would be nontrivial to users to know how to direct messages to a specific Discord channel.

RyanSquared avatar Jun 07 '18 15:06 RyanSquared

Well, LOVE just has an #irc channel in Discord that has a bridge, we could do that.

karai17 avatar Jun 07 '18 22:06 karai17

I'm happy to create a discord, since I now have it open more than I do IRC. I'll probably call it "moonscript" but it will have channels for lapis and any other of my significant projects. Does that sound good?

leafo avatar Jun 07 '18 22:06 leafo

That sounds good to me :) Promoting in on all appropriate pages (websites, readmes, etc) would really help boost uptake too.

karai17 avatar Jun 07 '18 22:06 karai17

Here it is https://discord.gg/Y75ZXrD

I'll start adding it places
