AWS Elastic Fabric Adapter support

/kind feature

Describe the solution you'd like Ability to specify Network Interface Instance Type "efa" so users can choose AWS Elastic Fabric Adapter for their workloads.

Anything else you would like to add: Currently, there is no way to specify the Network Interface Instance Type in the machine spec in order to get the "efa" network interface on the EC2 instance.

Environment:

  • Cluster-api-provider-aws version:
  • Kubernetes version: (use kubectl version):
  • OS (e.g. from /etc/os-release):

EFA is a complex feature and has some additional requirements to actually be usable by workloads, that aside, it can't be used at all without the EC2 instance being created with an EFA network interface, so I think supporting this would be useful for the high performance networking requirements some of our users may have.

I've been playing with this feature a little recently, and as far as I can tell, there seems to be no detrimental effect to using the EFA network without other configuration. Existing network requirements still seem to be satisfied.

To make this fully usable though, I know there are kernel drivers and MPI software needed on top, I'm learning more about this at the moment and if anyone has specific questions, I may be able to answer those over the next few days

The Kubernetes project currently lacks enough contributors to adequately respond to all issues and PRs.

This bot triages issues and PRs according to the following rules:

  • After 90d of inactivity, lifecycle/stale is applied
  • After 30d of inactivity since lifecycle/stale was applied, lifecycle/rotten is applied
  • After 30d of inactivity since lifecycle/rotten was applied, the issue is closed

You can:

  • Mark this issue or PR as fresh with /remove-lifecycle stale
  • Mark this issue or PR as rotten with /lifecycle rotten
  • Close this issue or PR with /close
  • Offer to help out with Issue Triage

Please send feedback to sig-contributor-experience at kubernetes/community.

I think this is valuable to add, will see if I can find the time to add the additional context from my research late last year

@JoelSpeed For the necessary drivers you mentioned above, probably we will need some addons mechanism in place before supporting this.

I had imagined this could be relatively self service in the first instance until we have something more concrete in place. I'm not sure what the progress of ClusterResourceSet is, but IIUC, that could be one way users ensure the drivers are present within their clusters
