Clean up AWS*Templates

Describe the solution you'd like AWSMachineTemplate uses AWSMachineSpec in Spec.Template.Spec.

However, because of our data persistent requirements, we store some per-instance information from AWS APIs in the spec, in particular, the ProviderID, and introduced by #1407 AWS Secrets Manager ARN.

Should this be cleaned up such that the fields are not present at all in the template?

Environment:

  • Cluster-api-provider-aws version: 0.5.0 (v1alpha3)
  • Kubernetes version: (use kubectl version): n/a
  • OS (e.g. from /etc/os-release): n/a

I'd rather keep the two the same, and specify which field don't apply to a template in a comment. This eliminates the need for code to be kept in sync, or modified in two places.

If we do indeed keep the shared data type (+1 from me on this, btw), then in addition to documenting via comments which fields are not meant to be used in template types, we should also add validation that they are not set via the validation webhook for the template types.

I've added the validation in #1490, which is what prompted the question.

What prohibits something like this working*?

type AWSMachineTemplateSpec struct {
   Everything elsse
}

type AWSMachineSpec struct {
	AWSMachineTemplateSpec

	// ProviderID is the unique identifier as specified by the cloud provider.
	ProviderID *string `json:"providerID,omitempty"`

	// CloudInit defines options related to the bootstrapping systems where
	// CloudInit is used.
	// +optional
	CloudInit *CloudInit `json:"cloudInit,omitempty"`
}
  • (not exactly because of the CloudInit struct)

With the proper json tagging for the embedded type, that could likely work.

The Kubernetes project currently lacks enough contributors to adequately respond to all issues and PRs.

This bot triages issues and PRs according to the following rules:

  • After 90d of inactivity, lifecycle/stale is applied
  • After 30d of inactivity since lifecycle/stale was applied, lifecycle/rotten is applied
  • After 30d of inactivity since lifecycle/rotten was applied, the issue is closed

You can:

  • Mark this issue or PR as fresh with /remove-lifecycle stale
  • Mark this issue or PR as rotten with /lifecycle rotten
