Delta Chat uses email as the transport layer, which is quite interesting. I wrote a little introduction to it on Delta Chat - a refreshing take on messaging.

I guess all telegram clients are opensource, but servers are not, don't know if it suites to your requirements

@alexanderadam : is Wire fully open source, or is it just the client-app that are open source? Looking at their github it seems that their servers are perhaps still closed source.

Looking at their github it seems that their servers are perhaps still closed source.

I am not quite sure what you mean‽

So their GitHub profile contains a repository with the name wire-server which contains the source code of the server (hence the name, I guess) and is licensed under AGPL-3.0. They even published their deploy script to make it easier to set up your own instance.

So maybe you can elaborate why you had a look at their GitHub repos and think that it is closed source? Maybe I'm missing something here?

@alexanderadam Sorry, carry on, I'm just stupid haha. I wanted to double check because I was confused by their github note saying that their project could be used to create a client that hooked in with their servers, and I didn't check the org repo collection.

From Telegram, it is only the clients that are open source.

Obviously, there's also https://signal.org, plus the combination of https://matrix.org with https://about.riot.im
