how to set more than one char color

Hi,

I need to put some letter in different color. Similare to the demo with the red dot. How can apply this only to more than one char number and on different char depending of the li.

Let say I have first li1 and need .char5 .char6 .char7 in red second li2 .char8 .char9 .char10 in red

I have tried to add .char5 .char6 .char7 and it stop to work when more than one .char class in the css.

I also tried to add .word1 .word2 in the css with no luck
