It's the real project, although it was developed over many years. It is also for several operating systems, and each use their own tooling. It's definitely not released ready to compile, and will take a bit of work have those kinks handled. To be honest, for me it also seems like enough work to get this thing together as it would to rewrite it. I'll give it a few some more time personally to see if anyone handles it as it doesn't really seem worth the effort in its current state. There are enough other packers, concepts, and techniques where if you do not have a legitimate reason to require it in working order that it is just a toy collectable.

I've installed several versions of Visual Studios, and played around with the settings enough to give it a decent shot without following control flow. I have personally kept VMware images ready in compiling state for projects in the past, and this would have definitely been one of them I'd have kept the same methodology...
