This is still relevant and would definitely be good to address. This repo has a testsuite now where this could belong.
Just going to summarize what I remember from a sync @cgwalters and I had related to this and https://github.com/containers/bootc/issues/372. - In a composefs world, it's fine to have non-`/usr` top-level...
The switch we're renaming was removed in https://github.com/coreos/coreos-assembler/pull/2066 and not readded so this is obsolete.
Neat, Prow CI uncovered a bug in Ignition: https://github.com/coreos/ignition/pull/1789 Anyway, it's trivial to work around it so let's do that instead.

I think this could still be useful but will close it for now until we feel the need for similar functionality again.
This is still relevant I think, though specifically in the initramfs case, I think that was fixed with the recent changes in rpm-ostree to use the treefile instead IIRC.
I think this is fixed by https://github.com/coreos/coreos-assembler/pull/3298 now.
I think it'd still be neat (esp. for people less comfortable with Fedora/CoreOS processes) but yeah the complexity is probably not worth it.
