set number issue

I have set number set in my configuration file (I use neovim but that should not matter). When I open a directory, the numbers are show in the NERDTree tab which while not massively useful is kinda neither her nor there. However, I do not have the numbers shown in the file tabs which is irritating.

What configuration do I need to make them show?
