Can we please make it so the JSON can be collapsed by default?

For huge JSON payloads it would be really nice to be able to isolate just the part you're concerned with...but you have to spend minutes collapsing all the objects you aren't interested in!

Would "Collapse All"/"Expand All" buttons would cover your use case?

This extension is not actually maintained (or even published in the Chrome app store anymore). You might be looking for something else?
