Add warning to Payoneer accounts unsuitable for small-scale game makers

Open robertjlee opened this issue 2 years ago • 4 comments

I was hoodwinked into opening a Payoneer account to link with my Itch.io, believing their hype about low fees and competitive rates.

What isn't obvious is that you need to receive $500 US into your Payoneer account before you can either withdraw it or spend it, except by transfer to another Payoneer account.

Payoneer have now implemented a $25+ annual account fee, and even though their help system says this will be taken after a period of 12 months of inactivity starting from the effective date, they emptied my account less than a month after the effective date.

I have raised a ticket twice and twice the ticket has been marked as resolved via an automated message, with no human reading the message. There is no way to mark a ticket as a complaint or to ensure it is read by a person. Good luck getting any money back from this company if they make any mistake.

Please add a warning to Payoneer to say that it's only suitable for larger-scale game producers (say, $500+ annually). Please also add a note that Payoneer can't be used directly for buying games on Itch (without a highly expensive Payoneer card).

Thanks for notifying us.

We're actually in the process of migrating to a new payouts processor, and will no longer be supporting Payoneer directly. Assuming no issues, this migration will be fully completely before the end of the year.

@leafo Any updates on this? Just got screwed in the same way with the Payoneer trap, luckily it wasn't a large sum by any means.

@Hexagon-77 If you're in the UK, I'd recommend complaining to the Financial Ombudsman; under UK law they're supposed to offer you the chance to exit the contract without penalty if they change the terms, but they didn't in my case and eventually offered my a small payment in compensation rather than wait for the ombudsman's judgement. It's a faff, but if enough people do it then they'll hopefully think twice in future.

@robertjlee I'm from Romania, but it was only like 7$ so it's not worth the hassle for me, thanks for the help though. Will definitely spread the word so other devs don't get sucked into this system, at least until they change it.
