Or possibly a new state that is both error and focused (which allows it have a different appearance from both states).

On macOS, each of the three parts of the date behaves similarly to a numeric stepper when focused. It may look like a TextInput, but it's a more advanced component.

Should use the standard date/time localization pattern supported by DateTimeFormatter (default to MMMM yyyy, which is basically what gets displayed now).
