Three-pane layout request

Open dmartzol opened this issue 7 months ago • 3 comments

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. A clear and concise description of what the problem is. Ex. I'm always frustrated when [...] I mainly use two-pane layout, but sometimes I want 3 columns for a very wide screen, without having to close all windows. All the other layouts that support more columns, also make the screen very convoluted if you have many windows open.

Describe the solution you'd like We could have a three-pane layout added to the defaults.

Describe alternatives you've considered An alternative could be a custom layout for three-pane added to the docs so users can add it easily.

Additional context For people that have a lot of windows open at the same time, it is hard to choose a layout other than those whose behavior is similar to the two-pane layout, which hides windows behind the front ones without splitting the screen into too many sections.

There is a 3-column layout already. 3 of them actually, one for each position you want to have the main panel on:

They are just not in the list by default, and I'm not sure if it should be, most people do not have enough space on their screens, and those who have can easily add the layout.

I think I didn't explain myself very well in the first message. Yes, I've noticed those 3 column layouts, but they are an extension of the Tall layout. They divide the non-main pane into one row for each window. Just like Tall does. But the Two Pane layout just puts every window behind each other.

With a 3 pane layout being an extension of the 2 pane layout, we could have 3 windows visible on the screen at all times, no matter how many windows there are open behind them.

Oh! Sorry for the confusion, my bad on interpreting it too. Then your request totally makes sense!

I think this is probably a job for custom layouts, yeah, but I don't have any current plans for any kind of repository of them. I'm not sure what that would look like.
