Should be piece of cake using rmarkdown::render.

Any hope for this? I am needing to cut and paste between RStudio and IJ due to lack of this feature. thanks!

No need for cut and paste. See https://github.com/vsch/idea-multimarkdown/issues/537#issuecomment-386631535 for a howto.

External tools can also be bound to a button if needed (although I prefer to use a shortcut).

Feel welcome to submit a PR with a knitr button.
