WAV versions of files
Hi!
Would it be possible to upload the WAV version of the audio recordings?
Thanks!
You can convert the ulaw files to wav files using sox. For production use, ulaw is exactly what's needed, though.
Yes but I'll still only have an 8KHz companded version and not studio quality as recorded and provided before conversion.
Unfortunately, I don't have the original .wav files. These came from a .tar.gz floating around on the Internet.
If anyone has the originals, I would be glad to replace all of the files with .wav and use a script to convert them to ulaw.
-Howard
I have the original master files as I'm the one who recorded them. This project was done so quickly that a lot of mistakes were made and I'd really like to fix them before uploading the original masters so it doesn't get confused.
They are primarily editing, checking filenames, and most importantly EQ adjustment per the Bellcore/Audichron specification. The files out now are full spectrum which not only sounds wrong, bit can cause distortion when auto converting to 8k/mulaw)
Once complete we would have audio normalized WAV files at 44.1 that can be converted to whatever codec you want.
That being said, what should I do? Should I create a new branch or append whats there? Any thoughts?
I also don't have access to an Asterisk system and could really use some help for testing as I work through it. Anyone interested in helping? A

I have multiple Asterisk systems including a test system I could use for this or give you access to. Happy to help however possible.
Hello @AlexKasper,
Thank you for offering to provide the .wav files, that would be great! I added you as a collaborator, so you can make changes directly to this repo if you want.
Creating a branch is fine, and when ready, we can merge the branch to master.
@InterLinked1, I also added you as a collaborator.
I'm happy to help with any testing as well.
Thanks again, Howard
Hi Howard & Interlinked - That's great! I will start to organize what I have and get a workflow set up.
Regarding Asterisk, @InterLinked1 can you reach out to me and perhaps we can chat directly? I want to get the latest Asterisk prompt set so I can match to it and maybe figure out the best way to test. Do you have that set and/or know where I can get it? (I have been out of that loop for years).
I'll then start processing the prompts in batches and I guess either upload them to a working branch here so they can be tested by others and we can sign them off or something? Maybe set milestones of the standard set and extras?
I'm not sure the best way to do this - @hharte as I have no expertise uploading audio revisions to GitHub and don't want to create a mess, can you advise on what the best method might be and or point me to something and/or help me set it up?
I'm also aware of a few other folks (e.g. NPSTN) that also have interest and expertise. It would be great to have them review as well. And when all is complete to satisfaction, perhaps as a final goal to submit as a standard set to Asterisk.
I know I can make them sound much better & cleaner, but managing the technical side of this is something I would need a partner for. Ping me and we can get it going! Thanks.
@AlexKasper Thank you for your effort in putting this together originally. I have been using them for years. Do you accept donations?
@johnsmunoz Good to hear and thank you for the kind offer!
I'll tell you what, I am going to redo these prompts to AT&T standards now that I've had a chance to meet with the Audichron engineer who did all the recordings originally.
They were shutting down their old studio but Pat still needed to make recordings from her home in Kentucky and they had to match all existing recordings. So we worked on it and came up with a near exact match in sound to their old tape method.
I will fix the other prompt issues and process them in this classic way so when done it will be indistinguishable from AT&T/Bellcore standard since it's now the exact same process method.
If you like it & use it, sure - send money! This was more of a labor of love, but there were costs, multiple flights, equipment and time - any contributions would be very much appreciated! Paypal to: [email protected]
@aKasperavicius I've just found this thread while looking online for the WAV files. Did you manage to make the WAV files available anywhere? Thanks so much for the time and effort you have put into this!
Hi Andrew,
A couple of us have been working off the original masters and have just about finished the re-editing the core set from the 44k masters. Unfortunately, since the set was recorded well over 10 years ago, the prompts have changed a bit and a good handful are now incorrect or missing and will need to be recorded.
The next step is to finish re-editing the “extra” set from the masters so we can identify what else has changed and is needed there, then we’ll need to organize a recording session with Pat and fill in the blanks. Finally we’ll do a large beta with as many people as we can gather to test and work out any kinks. Our final step would be to submit it as a standard set in the following Asterisk release.
With scheduling my guess is the beta will be ready to start by early summer. I am in the middle of a big work project and moving household from Germany which is a time suck, Pat is on hiatus from recording until June and others are back in school or work projects. Let me know if you want to be in (and/or help organize) the beta or Asterisk submission and it will be done faster! 😉
Alex

Thanks for the update. That sounds very exiting! I'd be happy to beta test!
I just stumbled upon that thread and as a result this repository. Has there been any further progress on a release of the high quality files?
Is there any way I can help? I have plenty of Asterisk experience and have done a decent amount of audio cleanup working on my clients' recordings.
We made some pretty decent progress, I think just time and things have gotten in the way. We both did some work on this last year but I'm not sure if anything has been done recently. At some point I think it's also planned to get some additional prompts recording, and we'll need to apply the same stuff to those.
Hi All,
Yes we did some work, but I am in the midst of a software dev project that has sucked up all my time and just haven’t had it. Things are settling down for me though and I’ll will be able to dedicate some hours to it in April. I will be in touch and would welcome assistance in testing with the latest versions of Asterisk.
