Ideas for a new name? (was: This repo is impossible to search)
I stumbled across this awesome tool while reading hackernews and then a few months later tried to find it took me ages! I had to go through heaps of combinations of search terms before i stumbled across it again. Even now that I have found it, when I searched for it by name git-repo it still doesn't show in google.
Have you thought about changing the name? it would be great if more people could find this!
well, I'm not against a name change, now we need to find something that suits well what it does, that would be easy to search and does not look like a startup name with quadruple is or triple os ๐
Actually, choosing the name took me about 35s when I needed to create the directory to start coding and never thought about it again!
What about naming it git-services?
(please choose ๐/๐ reactions belows to vote for/against that name)
Given a cursory google search it looks like that would be easier to search.
@guyzmo I quite like git-repo as a name I'd probably just try to add as many relevant links to this project as you can.
potentially, registering a domain name might make the project easier to find.

I propose shylops.
Or, using: http://wordoid.com/ : eligit.
@dmerejkowsky you're not helping โบ @graingert I bought https://git-repo.org though we'll need to make a nice page
@guyzmo GitHub pages + CloudFlare HTTPS?
Just to note, git-repo is also the name of the repo of Google's repo tool.
I like this git-repo better though. ๐ฑ
@graingert hosting is not an issue (I'm covered here) but doing a webpage (beyond the README file) is not my priorityโฆ adding more features, and a better documentation is.
@guyhughes I know and I don't really care because there's no real name conflict (google's tool really is named repo everywhere, and only in a few places git-repo).
So this is why I suggested git-services instead of git-repo, as there's nothing called git-services โบ
I guess I'll just flip a coin for a name change when it will be time to start working on 2.0. Until then, let's keep on working on implementations!
For the pattern I want something that starts with git-, so it can be called as soon as it's installed using git AWESOMENAME with no configuration.
My favorite alternative is git-services which has 0 conflict.
I only discovered this via a "Prior art" PR on the GitHub "hub" tool (https://github.com/github/hub/pull/1345 ), so +1 for "git repo" being a bit hard to find.
My suggestion would be git-host, so the subcommands end up being:
git host hub ...
git host lab ...
git host bb ...
If you search for "git host", the results are all for git hosting services, and if you search for "git host cli", this repo is already the 5th link for English search results: https://www.google.com/search?q=git+host+cli
Thank you for the suggestion! ๐ It's definitely a good alternative to the only other realistic name suggested here.
I have to admit that the name git-services is growing on me, and right now it has my preference (I'm even squatting the git-services namespace on github for that purpose ๐). As the tool is designed to encourage the use of aliases, I don't expect anybody to type git services (or git host) except for git services config.
I do not like name ends with 's', as a non-native speaker.
I guess git servicez is probably easier anyway.
@guyzmo

When I try to hit with https, I get:
Your connection is not secure
The owner of git-repo.org has configured their website improperly. To protect your information from being stolen, Nightly has not connected to this website.
When I try to hit with http, I get 301s:
The page isnโt redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.
oops, @metasean, thanks for the note ๐ fixing those
Just to note, git-repo is also the name of the repo of Google's repo tool.
Note that it is taken on OpenHub as https://www.openhub.net/p/git-repo , but it mostly calls itself "repo"
I only found this interesting project because I was looking for Android's repo tool.
Anyway, git-services (IMO git-service sounds better) seems more distinctive to me, or something around workflow: git-workflow, git-wf, git-wofl, git-flow, git-work ...
