Add icon/component using customToolbarSelect without removing the existing trash component

I'm trying to add an additional component to the selected toolbar using customToolbarSelect but when I do, the default trash icon is removed. Is there any way of preventing this? With customToolbar the additional icons are just added next to the default ones, that's what I'm after here.
