Supersedes and closes #364 and closes #323; I redid the changes from scratch to try and simplify the logic, and hopefully give the PR a smaller, more acceptable diff.

I also updated the documentation, and, as per your request in https://github.com/graysky2/profile-sync-daemon/pull/364#issuecomment-2067044909, made it into a single commit, and tested on my machine. It seems to work correctly.
