Ordered List Counters (letters, numerals?)

Is it possible to set the ordered list counters of different levels (in nested lists) to use different types of counters (vs all numbers)? For clarity, I mean something like this:

As opposed to:

Note the difference: in the first, different levels in the list are differentiated by numbers, then letters, then roman numerals. I find it a little bit less readable to have all levels use the same counting mechanism.
