For me this happens on macos 12.7, with firefox 129.0.1 and jabref 5.15. Both jabref and firefox installed through homebrew.
Following the [manual install](https://docs.jabref.org/collect/jabref-browser-extension#manual-installation) step of copying `org.jabref.jabref.json` to `~/Library/Application Support/Mozilla/NativeMessagingHosts/org.jabref.jabref.json` has resolved it for me.
