The "Solus" icon set in settings has a broken thumbnail and will lead to missing system icons if applied
I wrote a bit about this in my feedback in the forum and was requested to open an issue here as well.
The core problem is around some of the Solus Plasma theme settings. Some are basic QOL and some are actually a bug. I will start with some of the light weight QOL stuff first.
Lacks Global Theme for Solus (QOL) There are theme components for Color, Plasma Style, and Icons. However, there is no quick setting for the Solus theme. When you go to Global Theme, you just see the Breeze global themes.
Again, this is minor
No Discover which also leads to AppSteam issue (BUG)
I know Solus is moving to Discover and Gnome Software Store, So this will likely go away at some point with a future version.
However, as it is right now, there are a few problems. In KDE when you search for an app that is not installed, say Discover even, it gives you an option to "Get Discover" and if you click on it, it will give you an error unless Discover is installed. For an experienced user, this is no issue, but for someone new to Solus or Linux in general, this will be confusing and is not optimal.
This will be fixed when Discover it installed by default.
Solus Icons are broken (BUG)
First off, if you go to Colors & Themes > Icons the SolusSC Icon Set thumbnail is blank.
Second, there is a major bug with the SolusSC icon set. If you set it, it looks fine off once applied.
However, if you attempt to log out, you will notice icons missing in the logout / power off timer screen.
Then, after you log back in or after reboot, you will see several icons missing.
Now, the good thing is the icon set is not active by default, but it should be removed completely until fixed or replaced.
I first noticed this on my bare metal install. But have confirmed it on a fresh install in a VM, which is where these images are from.
There are multiple, distinct issues in this bug report, which makes it unactionable as-is. This needs to be broken up.
1. Lacks Global Theme for Solus (QOL)
This is intentional. Our Plasma branding uses the Breeze themes by default, as they are the themes provided by and updated by KDE. We do not have a "Solus theme". This is not a bug.
2. Discover is not installed by default and the user gets an error when clicking on the notification
Discover and Gnome Software will be installed by default from 4.8 and onwards. This bug, however, shouldn't happen. please open separate bug report for that.
3. Solus Icons are broken (BUG)
This is a legitimate bug. Let's keep this report focused on that.
Those are necessary for the Solus Software Center, that will be removed in Solus 5.0, but we're months away from that at least. They aren't intended to be used as a system icon theme, but this isn't intuitive, and leads to a bad user experience. We should probably hide this icon set from Plasma settings.
The timeline for deprecating the Solus SC has been moved up from the 5.0 milestone to the 4.8 Epoch milestone, due to the technical details of the Epoch.
As such, it makes no sense to put work into hiding the Solus SC icon set in Settings since
- It will no longer exist as of 4.8
- We haven't gotten other complaints about this
