IntelliJ won't open project after crash

What happened

Plugged an Android device in for USB debugging. The Mac crashed. Then after reboot, I started IntelliJ from the Toolbox. Any project I tried to open, it would flash as if it was trying, then ended back up to the screen showing my projects. Pick a different one, same thing. Removed the .idea directory and the .iml file in my latest project and was able to get in.
