Aligning figures in grid to the bottom.

I am trying to put 2 figures side-by-side. I am currently trying the grid directive for this.

:::::{grid} 2

:::{figure} assets/fish_swimming.svg
:height: 350px

:::{figure} assets/stanford_bunny.svg
:height: 225px

This shows the figures as attached:

How do I bottom align the figures? Is there a better way to produce subfigures so that I can have proper referencing of subfigures as Fig1a and Fig1b etc. I know the figure directive can be used for that but I want a two column figure style with both bottom aligned.
