Marginal Notes do not render correctly in PDF

This is potentially similar to #1439.

I am playing with using jupyter-book for lecture notes for my new course, at https://benjaminpope.github.io/howstarswork/intro.html, source here.

I like to use Tufte-style margin notes, and am following the docs on margin content.

These render exactly as I hope (e.g. see margins in this first lecture draft) but when I compile a pdf with

jupyter-book build content --builder pdfhtml

I get this PDF, in which the margins are cut off:

book.pdf

If I instead use

jupyter-book build content --builder pdflatex

I get this PDF, in which the margin notes have become quote blocks.

Is this a known bug / is there something I need to do to get the template right? I would like to replicate the behaviour in Quarto of the marginal notes which deploy nicely in this blog and the associated PDF.
