Why can't we use markdown syntax directly

To enable Markdown view click Settings -> Markdown

I don't think that's what waybi meant. You have to use the style dropdown to e.g. format something as 'heading 1'. If you just type plain markdown (i.e. # foobar), it doesn't work.
