that one's my fault... i did this deliberately because i thought the vim xxd behavior was too C-centric and i wanted to be able to use it for other languages....
annoyingly, the default vim xxd output isn't ideal for C either --- the use of int rather than size_t causes warnings, and there's no easy way to mark both variables...
