Tried some of the alternatives now. The only one I found that that had a "no credit card" & "no paid plan" Static Images API that almost looked good as Mapbox was Geoapify. With the "osm-bright" style, Geoapify looks like this:

We could of course consider to use something else than a Static Images API to convey the same thing, though I must say, I have followed the guide, and the map part is quite powerful and fun.
