Display freezes often

Open Teekivi opened this issue 8 years ago • 5 comments

The display often freezes while being in the greeter view (such as when logging in or unlocking).

When the freeze happens, I can move my mouse and see the mouse cursor moving accordingly, but clicking or typing on the keyboard doesn't change anything on the display. I can type in my password and press Enter and I'll be logged in as soon as the freeze ends. This usually takes about a minute.

If the freeze happens after the login/unlock screen has been shown, the display stays like that. Otherwise (such as sometimes when booting up), the display is completely black (aside from the mouse cursor).

I'm experiencing this issue with a Dell laptop which has Intel HD 4000 + AMD Radeon 7670m hybrid graphics. I believe I'm on the open source radeon graphics driver. Don't know if it can affect, but my home directory is encrypted.

I've had this issue since the very beginning of using elementary OS Loki stable version. It's by far the most annoying issue I have had to endure.

Interestingly, some days ago after doing an apt upgrade, the issue went away for some time. But after some subsequent apt upgrade the issue came back.

The issue has become more severe as, after booting up, the display is often completely black (aside from the mouse cursor, which reacts to mouse input) and it can take several minutes before the login screen is displayed. During that time, the display goes off when no input has been given during the display-turn-off timeout. Usually, I resort to restarting the computer several times.

I've figured out that I can ease my situation by restarting the lightdm process in a virtual terminal by executing sudo killall lightdm.

I've attached two log files from /var/log/lightdm/ from the time of a previous freeze:

lightdm.log seat0.log

I get a similar issue on my old alienware laptop, and for me, it seems to be an issue with the bluetooth card using 100% cpu, causing greeter to take forever to startup. I found the following stack overflow answer resolves the problem for my device. Your mileage may vary, of course: https://askubuntu.com/a/1059845

I have disabled bluetooth and wifi through a BIOS setting on a Dell Inspiron 15 3583, but the freeze still occurs.

top shows Xorg using nearly 100% of the CPU when the desktop unfreezes.

Yeah, it's always LightDM. I hate it.
