Show a message when housekeeping is enabled
If the GSD privacy plugin for automatically trashing files is enabled we should make mention of it in the plug and possibly link to System Settings to configure it.
I have a proposed branch for configuring the settings here: https://github.com/elementary/switchboard-plug-security-privacy/pull/51
The settings URL for this pane is settings://security/housekeeping
What do you think about trash icon changing after housekeeping is enabled? Might work as a good way to indicate passively
@SixFingeredAmish I would be interested in seeing some designs for a trash with housekeeping. Seeing the full trash icon still triggers my OCD :p
@danrabbit
I think a reason the full trash icon triggers your OCD is because it isn't very subtle, it seems to be quite eye-catching (the transition from an empty can to a full one is bigger than other OS’s)
| elementary | Other OSes | |
|---|---|---|
| Empty trash | Can with closed lid | Can with no lid |
| Full trash | Can with visible crumpled paper, lid tilted on side | Can with crumpled paper visible |
This is a philosophical design decision I guess. Maybe a full trash can should be subtle, is it important that people know their trashcan isn't empty?
My proposed change would be:
| Previous | Proposed | |
|---|---|---|
| Empty trash | Can with closed lid | Can with no lid |
| Full trash | Can with visible crumpled paper, lid tilted on side | Can with crumpled paper |
| Full trash (housekeeping enabled) | - | Can with wireframed crumpled paper |
With Housekeeping enabled, we don't want to have the discomfort of seeing a full trash can, but we don't want to show an empty trash can either because that isn't true. A solution would be to show a more subtle full trashman, where the crumpled paper is wireframed (just the outlines, and maybe a semi-transparent color fill).
Let me know what you think!
This needs new icons to be progressed.
@jeremypw I don't think a different icon is necessary for fixing this issue. Primarily I think what's important is a message that housekeeping is enabled with a link to settings. Probably in an infobar?
iOS Photos actually shows how many days each file has remaining which is a pretty nice touch:
@danirabbit Do you mean in infobar in the Trash View? Showing days left is a nice idea.
@jeremypw yeah exactly
