Calibration error

Are there limits or recommended sizes for the calibration checkerboard?

I have found that I get a larger RMS error with a larger checkerboard (above 2mm for my case). Is there the optimal size to get the best calibration? Or do I need more squares in my checkerboard? Any more info on this would be very helpful.

I don't have a recommendation for the calibration pattern size, but I will mention that the dot pattern grids seem to lead to a more accurate calibration than the checkerboard pattern in most cases in terms of the RMS error. If you have the option, I would go with the dot pattern.
