Unable to join any groups - "sorry an error occured"

Each attempt results in "Sorry an error occured while loading the content". Running in a new Chrome tab.

Only error in the console seems to be:

When you get the "error occurred" message, make a note of the group name and go back onto the group page (you'll need to "Pause" the extension by clicking the 'Y' and unchecking the check box).

When you go back on to the group page, there's a very good chance you'll actually be a member. In our testing we've found that these "error occurred" messages were a misnomer - the membership join worked.

Finally dug into what the underlying error is:

{"ygError":{"hostname":"gapi7.grp.bf1.yahoo.com","httpStatus":401,"errorMessage":"Captcha validation overlimit","errorCode":2203,"sid":"SID:YHOO:groups.yahoo.com:2019-12-08-23-10-57hlirjjsfi6hdjeirognhpesnyriuvelvwgusbabl-bn4ESgYXcpA/vEW+FQ

Looks like it's unfortunately not allowing me to join these groups.

Having the same issue, pretty sure I'm not being joined into any groups.

First thought it might be an issue with incognito navigation, but it also happens in normal browsing mode.

I just tried joining the group in the picture of the OP (cryonet). It worked for me, so I'm really not sure what to suggest. Sorry. I guess Yahoo isn't particularly concerned with fixing issues in the final days of Groups' life.

If you still want to help, we need people to contact Yahoo and put public pressure on them. There's a call to action, and the people behind it have successfully got Yahoo to back-pedal on previous changes. A main goal of the campaign is to get the deadline extended, which would really help us get more groups.

Oof, are we hitting limits from reCAPTCHA? From the reCAPTCHA FAQ

If you wish to make more than 1k calls per second or 1m calls per month, you must use reCAPTCHA Enterprise or fill out this form and wait for an exception approval.

Also, I found this Yahoo Answer from 2013 which mentions the same Captcha validation overlimit message.

That means the entire Yahoo Groups site is collectively maxing out the reCAPTCHA API limits, because Yahoo never requested a higher cap for their API key? I wonder if we are hitting the 1k/minute or the million-per-month limit (hopefully the former). I only just heard about this and created an account right now to begin, but I'm only seeing this error on my very first group. Any advice for me?

Update: see child comment. Only works for a few registrations.

Only works for a few registrations.

Wouldn't it be relatively easy to create many email addresses if someone have a self-hosted mail server, or with Google's + email operator?

Omar-Elrefaei avatar Dec 09 '19 16:12 Omar-Elrefaei

The + trick doesn't work on Yahoo.

@andrewferguson is this something we should investigate with my mail server? I know we discussed it ages ago, but I can't remember what the outcome was. Was it that it blocked it by IP or something?

The problem is it's more hassle than it's worth setting up a new Yahoo account only to be able to join a handful of groups with it. Strange as it may seem, completing the CAPTCHAs is the most efficient way.

"It works fine now, I have been joining groups for some hours."

(That's not me, and I haven't verified personally.)

Still getting the error. Any advice on how I can still help the project?

Keavon avatar Dec 09 '19 19:12 Keavon

When getting this specific error, I just refresh the 'info' page, it shows that I did in fact join the group and I'm able to continue to the next group.
