Firefox loses focus after pop-up in Gnome 3 (linux)

When run under Gnome 3.6 (gnome-shell 3.5.91) on Ubuntu Linux and v3.4.1 in Fedora 17, Firefox loses keyboard focus when the pop-up is displayed, and doesn't regain it when the pop-up is dismissed. The user must click in the Firefox window before his keys are honored. Thumbnail Zoom Plus' hot-keys don't do anything, either.

The problem happens with either setting of "Pop-up Takes Keyboard Focus". The problem doesn't happen in Xfce, LXDM or Unity window managers, nor in Gnome 2.

This problem was reported by "jokerdino" in a post on Ubuntu Forums. See the post for more details.

I tried some variations on how the add-on handles focus and popping up and dismissing the pop-up but nothing made a difference. My conclusion at this point is that it's a bug in Gnome or possibly Firefox.

Jokerdino submitted issues to Mozilla and Gnome's bug tracker.

I can reproduce this on Unity as well. I really wish this was fixed, let me know if I can do anything to help including allowing someone to remote in.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

If it's a firefox or Gnome bug, there may not be anything I can do.

If you're familiar with Firefox add-on development you're welcome to try changing your own fork (copy) of Thumbnail Zoom Plus and let me know if you can find a solution.

That's ok, I hate javascript :> But if you need a machine the problem happens on consistently mine is always at your disposal.

I don't know how we lived before without this extension! Excellent work! (Even if I'm stuck on windows to use it.)

Here's a tip which might help:

If you have random focus issues running Firefox or Thunderbird on Ubuntu (or any other debian derivative), please, check if process called "unclutter" is running.

It seems that the default configuration of "unclutter" package causes some kind of race condition that causes random focus issues with Firefox and Thunderbird. Running unclutter with flag "-noevents" instead may workaround the problem. This is from a Firefox bug report about the problem: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=795817

Thanks for reporting this in detail. I am experiencing the same issue running Gnome 3.20.2 on Antergos Linux (Arch derivative) without unclutter running. I tried the Steal My Focus addon that you mentioned in the Ubuntu forum discussion, but it did not ameliorate the situation. ThumbnailZoomPlus is really a great addon, and the only one of its kind that works for me at the moment, so this bug in Gnome/Firefox is very unfortunate =(
