I've written a short `fastmultigather` quickstart here: https://github.com/sourmash-bio/sourmash/issues/3095.

note: as of sourmash_plugin_branchwater v0.9.5 [link](https://github.com/sourmash-bio/sourmash_plugin_branchwater/releases/tag/v0.9.5), the results from `fastgather` and `fastmultigather` are now identical to those from `sourmash gather`. So a lot of the caveats above are now moot!...

see comments in https://github.com/sourmash-bio/sourmash/issues/3171 as well as revamped test infrastructure in https://github.com/sourmash-bio/sourmash/pull/3627

(I suspect `compiler` is needed - see https://github.com/conda-forge/sourmash_plugin_branchwater-feedstock/blob/main/recipe/meta.yaml)

Sorry, didn't look at the recipe - that should include relevant compilers! I'll look at this over the weekend and see if I can provide some more relevant suggestions 😆...
