Is CosmJs unmaintained?
There were zero commits from July to December 2024, and there've been barely any recently after a brief January 2025 sprint of updates.
Simon Warta mentioned in https://github.com/cosmos/cosmjs/issues/1618#issuecomment-2574934505 that Confio hasn't had a mandate to develop CosmJs for a very long time now, which is why issues tend to go unaddressed.
The last time Confio received general public goods funding that covered CosmJs appears to have been Cosmos Hub proposal 103 in early 2023. (and it looks like they never formally proposed a 2nd tranche of funding from the Cosmos Hub.) The ICF funded Confio's development of CosmWasm in 2024, but instead funded Cosmology to develop CosmJs and "rebuild CosmJS’ base functionality to make it leaner and more efficient," - and Cosmology ended up renaming themselves Hyperweb and announcing a TypeScript library that fully replaces CosmJs.
ICF dropped funding for JavaScript libraries in 2025. Should projects make plans to transition away from @cosmjs/stargate towards @interchainjs/cosmos? (InterchainJS got publicly announced by Cosmology/Hyperweb in January.)
Great summary, well researched.
The latest news is that I got a maintenance agreement with the ICF to work on CosmJS maintenance for the rest of 2025. So in June I will start going through the backlog. Maybe a handful of days per month. No team.
InterchainJS is certainly a more actively developed and more modern library. For the majority us users it is certainly wirth trying it. But we want to make sure existing CosmJS users have a solid library too.
Recently I initiated the internal disucussion for H1 2026 maintenance. I will follow up here as soon as I know something.
