Evaluate alternative backends

To leverage newer faster tools (e.g. GPU, parallelization) with potentially nicer APIs, we're interested in exploring different backends or providing a flexible system to swap out backends on-the-fly:

Numpy alternatives:

• Jax
• MLX
• Torch

Pandas alternatives:

• Polars
