feature request: customized I/O handling

The workflow input and output handling is based on the input/output types of the individual nodes. I was wondering if it was possible to have a feature to define custom input/output handling, perhaps a feature that allows for handling logic to be implemented in Python. You could use the pkg_resources directory and create a plugins folder for example.
