Hi @dims,

Thanks for you interest. I provided an update a couple of months back in this issue, but I can repost the update here and add additional elements:

1. Pravega is a core technology of two EU projects (https://neardata.eu/, https://cloudskin.eu/). In this context, we are working with health-related institutions building PoCs that solve data management problems thank to Pravega tiered data streams. In addition to (National Center for Tumor Diseases, Germany) PoC we built and we are extending, we are now working with UKHSA as well for building a Pravega-based PoC for managing and processing genomic data. The work with use cases can be found also in their respective GitHub repos (https://github.com/neardata-eu, https://github.com/cloudskin-eu). We have showcased this work in conferences like HiPEAC'25.
2. We have used Pravega in two new research publications: https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3700824.3701099 https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3700824.3701097 (and one more that is under submission). Hopefully, this will attract some attention from the scientific community to join the project.
3. We have added two new committers outside the main original sponsoring company to the project (@cheleb, @gfinol) that have demonstrated interest and willingness to contribute. I worked closely with @gfinol to merged a few PRs recently in Pravega, one of them fixing and updating the build script that is not fully working.
4. We have contacted TAG Contributor Strategy via an issue to get feedback on growing our community (without much traction so far): https://github.com/cncf/tag-contributor-strategy/issues/747. We would be really interested in adding to the community people interested in Kubernetes and Operators, to lead the Operator projects (including the Zookeeper and Bookkeeper Operators in the Pravega project that are useful to other open-source projects).

In summary, we are working towards making the project self-sustainable. To this end, I would appreciate if you could give us i) more time to see the outcomes of some of these activities, and ii) specific CNCF resources/guidance to help us in this task.

Feedback from the original sponsoring org is that the team has been disbanded and working on other projects, so the Pravega project has been orphaned from their point of view.

If I may add something to the discussion: we made Pravega as one of the core technologies for 2 European Research Projects (https://neardata.eu/, https://cloudskin.eu/), which can be seen as current sponsors of the project. The main goal is to exploit Pravega to build useful technology for the uses cases in the projects (e.g., health, automotive, etc.). This means that, while the original sponsor may not be maintaining the project anymore, there are ongoing efforts with Pravega that could make the project relevant to other companies (at least, this is the aspiration).

Thanks @RaulGracia - that is great to hear. Currently, the project looks like it had minimal or no contributions for 12+ months. Do you or the new sponsors (Neardata & Cloudskin) have a timeline when they expect to start contributing to the project again?

@chira001, in the context of the EU Neardata and Cloudskin projects, we are working on solutions for various use cases in which Pravega is a technology pillar. For example, we built a semantic video search service that uses Pravega for ingesting video and then generates vector embeddings for searching video fragments similar to a input image: https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3700824.3701097. Our current work involves using Pravega streams as a foundation for FaaS services and vector DBs.

A consequence of focusing our work around use-cases is that our contributions are related to the Pravega ecosystem, rather than to the main repository. But we will make an effort to improve that in the next weeks/months.

The Pravega project has not been maintained since early 2024. Whilst there are a number of active users of the project, most ongoing work is limited to integrations to other projects that are using it, and other ecosystem components. As a result, we are proposing to archive the project until new project maintainers can be found for Pravega. Once archived, the project is able to re-apply for CNCF membership when it meets the criteria for one of the project levels.
